Hospice Embraces New Style

Raoul Blanco with Mrs. Rae Gremillion -  Director of Community Development, Hospice of Acadiana

By Patricia Gannon

Lafayette - Hospice is well-known for its endings, less so for new beginnings.

On December 4th, Hospice of Acadiana will collaborate with designer Raoul Blanco for a couture show at City Club that is fundraiser and memorial, a request and bequest at the same time.

“Pairing up with someone of his international recognition is taking Hospice into an unknown,” said Rae Gremillion, director of community development at Hospice of Acadiana. “We’ve never had a couturier approach us with a one-of-a-kind event like this.” “Our director immediately went to Raoul’s website and said, ‘Oh my God, those are beautiful.”

All funds will go to Hospice while the designer completes a personal mission. Christened Lights on the Sky, the event name is a poetic phrase derived from Blanco’s gazing at the night sky in order to sense his father’s presence.

“My father was a romantic,” said Blanco. “He played songs to my mother on our stereo console-- mostly boleros-- it’s a [Latin] dance for two. So the theme of the style show is the bolero and ladies like my mother used to be. She was flirtatious. He was a dreamer.”

The style show collection will feature French and Italian imported textiles by Solstiss, the French firm that dressed Grace Kelly for her wedding and contributed to Kate Middleton’s gown, Gandini, Denis et Fils, Escada, and others. “Colors are my thing, so there will be plenty,” said Blanco.

Guests will also enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres with chances to bid on a Blanco suit as well as a four-course dinner for six prepared on site by Italian culinary experts Giorgio Floridia and Antonella Minardi.

The senior Raoul passed away three years ago. “It’s been hard to let him go,” said Blanco. “During his last days, he was more concerned about us than himself. Hospice treated us with so much dignity and support they became part of our family.  I promised him I would do whatever I could to help Hospice organizations and cancer causes.”

Blanco said that in his culture, the elderly and infirm remain with family caregivers as long as possible and his father ultimately chose Hospice after confinement to a VA hospital.  “We even brought his recliner. They made it like home. The doctors were fantastic.”

Blanco learned sewing from his grandmother and began sketching by the time he was seven, later attending art school for the fundamentals.  His artistic talent caught the eye of more than one couture icon in Puerto Rico and the U.S., where he subsequently moved and has since had ateliers in New York, San Francisco, Napa Valley, New Orleans and now Lafayette.  He continues to serve clients worldwide.

If Lafayette embraces the event, Lights on the Sky will return annually to aid Hospice with its mission of comfort, care, education, and peace for the terminally ill. Gremillion couldn’t be happier. “Since we are a community -based Hospice, to have the community support us in a groundbreaking event is just phenomenal.”

“That is definitely the reason it means so much to us—for someone to do this event who’s reaped the benefits and understands.”

Ticket donations are $100. Mail checks to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Lafayette, La. 70503. For credit cards or more information, contact Rae Gremillion at 337.232.1234, RSVP by December 1.

A coat dress by Raoul Blanco in silk matelasse by Italian textile house Gandini is among the couture ensembles which will be presented at the Hospice of Acadiana's "Lights on the Sky" fundraiser.

Poor writing or journalism….

Poor writing or journalism….

It always amazes me the lack of respect, professionalism and originality that some called “writers or journalists” possesses… I believe that writing with ingenious humor is a natural; it must run in the writer’s vessels to be able to reach their hearts and others….

In a recent “The Daily Advertiser” publication, I believe it was this past September 19 and I said believe because I don’t follow this writer, I was told that this society writer (a she)wrote a column about the new iPhone 6 where she made very distinctive remarks to a specific class thinking this will make her “funny”… It didn’t take me much to pull out this column online and yes, there it was... I copy the remarks directly from her column and they read as follow:

“I always wondered what companies do with all those old phones. They say there is a recycling program, but who knows? They could end up in some Central or South American country just like old cars and T-shirts that were printed with the name of the losing Super Bowl team.

You can just imagine a bunch of poor Ecuadorans running around with iPhone 3s in T-shirts sporting the Denver Broncos logo with "Super Bowl XLVIII Champions" printed below.”

Great, isn’t?! There’s one thing called “fact check” used by reporters, writers and others in this kind of business which I guess this lady didn’t bother to do or use (strike one)…… Also, there’s a second and very noticeable fact in this article which is called “racist” and surprisingly this writer’s editor let it go through circulation (strike two)…… Bad thing for a paper that is trying to survive in the competitive world of media specially having two other companies ranking superior to this one (strike three and out!)……

Well guess what??? A fact check shows the following:

Of all of Latin America, Ecuador shows the strongest smart phone growth over the last three years, up almost 250%. The country has the most active cell phones per capita, more than one for every inhabitant, than any country in Latin America.

Perhaps this lady should know that to be a “GOOD” writer, reporter or commentator is more than wearing pearls and a fur cuffed cardigan for a picture…… How about a public apology by her and her editor??? Not that that will make her a better writer anyways…

Mrs. Therese Mason...

And in Father's Day I was fitting one of my designs for the fabulous Mrs. Therese Mason at her lovely home in Covington, Louisiana. This lady is a charm and so her husband Mr. Mason. The design is made out of French black and silver blue silk brocade. She will wear this creation at her son's wedding... I had work with Mrs. Mason other times and love that her husband is always involved in the process, he has excellent taste... Divine couple, indeed...

Shaquana Lewis...

Talent is priority and respect…

Many times people tell me that their daughters, sons or friends want to become a model or wish to be in the talent industry and often this statement follows with the question, “Where should they go?”

As we know the big cities are the places to be for those pursuing these kind of careers. However, no many can take or have the luxury to be there and try. Some are lucky and it will take just a snap for them to become stars, others may struggle for a while and will make it at the end, or simply will quit after realizing there is other ways for them to go be happy and successful…

To do something well you have to love what you do… Most important, when you love what you do there is no fear to share your talent or gift. I have work with many talented ladies and gentlemen in the fashion industry, and this one includes the models and their agents of course… They are a big part of what we are… Locally I had and have the great opportunity to work with many of these fabulous ladies…Farrah GrahamLauren CheelyKatherine GordonMeghan ReddRenee Reese CollinsHannah StepanekEggy Andrian others…

One of the ladies I work with locally had showed to me that her love for this field is genuine, and she’s here to authentically share her gift and passion. When you want to do something well the best part is to begin with the right mentors, no matter where you live. That’s the most important part to the rest of your journey… The rest will come alone is the talent is there… So if you are to ask me for my suggestion about where to go I will point at the direction of Shaquana Lewis…

Shaquana Lewis is the owner and director of Shaquana International Modeling Agency LLC. Shaquana has model for me in the past, she had shown how passionate she is about not just her modeling agency but the attention and team work she has created between her and all the ones that share her work. Shaquana’s involvement in the community has also being very noticeable… I noticed that to her is not just about a money making industry, it’s about doing it right, well and inject that same passion to the ones among her…. To add more to it, Shaquana count with one of the most talented photographers in town, Mr. JD Mosley from Mosley Media… What else you can ask for? You will see more of Shaquana and her beautiful models in my future presentations… Bravo Shaquana! I take my hat off for you Diva, indeed!

Passion...

I’m passionate about what I do, indeed…

Every stitch is carefully calculated, every cut on a piece of fine textile is well studied and analyzed, every touch the pressing iron gives to my pieces melts over every curve and or line of the design… When building up a design my body moves as I make its curves through the stitches of the sewing machine…

Yes, I do baby these pieces as they begin taking form, just pure passion…. That’s why one must be very cautious when coming near me and my passion….

New Orleans NBA All Stars Party 2014 with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Benson...

New Orleans NBA All Stars Party 2014 with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Benson
by Raoul Blanco

Once upon a time a man entered into a marvelous world hidden behind the most spectacular and sumptuous red draperies……  I was that man…

So we got an invitation from Mr. and Mrs. Tom Benson to attend the “New Orleans Pelicans NBA All-Stars Party” and immediately I started planning what to wear, no difficult, as my partner Mr. Aaron Martin says, "Everything in your closet is black, black and black"…  Go figure…

This time Mrs. Gayle Benson chose the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center as the venue.  Once again Mrs. Benson reached out to the incredible talented event designer Mr. Bronson Van Wyck to turn the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center entrance into the most magnificent Ball room.  Mr. Van Wyck had work previously with Mrs. Benson for the Super Bowl Party 2013, turning part of New Orleans City Park into a spectacular mansion to celebrate the occasion…  Mrs. Benson and Mr. Van Wyck can turn any parking lot into “The Great Gatsby” mansion…

There was a divine seating area, more like a living room, decorated with giant pelican’s frescos and white sofas for the guests to relax and have some cocktails after the buggy buggy…   Another fabulous seating area in the middle of the venue kept the attendees gathered and entertained as if they were at home.  Many small rounded tables all over dressed with impeccable white linens and fresh flowers invited the crowd to share and be cozy while the champagne kept coming out, Ms. Divine Patricia Gannon would’ve love this.  We shared our table with NBA star #14 Mr. Jason Smith, his wife and their entourage, what a great company…  I had a picture taken next to Jason Smith and I have never felt so short until then, gosh!!!  The music band was terrific; they even got someone with walking crutches into the dance floor…

Bars stations were located around the facilities, all wood work painted in a rich red hue…  Every staff member dressed in black and white.  The ladies that served at the bar stations were precious and delightful, real women and real old school, loved them all…  Food coming out at all times, two ladies pursued me during the night with delicious canapés’ platters, I guess they thought I was too slim (remember, I wore black)…

Mr. Tom Benson was looking absolutely handsome.  Mrs. Gayle Benson was lovely and beautiful as always, wearing a form fitted rugged red cocktail dress with French embroidered lace bolero and inserts.  A divine cascade of beautiful diamonds decorated her delicate neck, same for her earrings.  I noticed that when I hugged her, the body guards gotten a bit hesitated, so I did it again, and again, and again.  Mrs. Benson knows me well and knows there is lots of wicked in me, so she just giggled at it…. We love this lady!!! J

Once again Mr. Tom Benson and his lovely wife Mrs. Gayle Marie Benson got their guests feeling fabulous and everyone enjoyed every moment of this marvelous affair…  Louisiana and its people, the best!!!

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Tom Benson,

Raoul Blanco
